Painting “Kubistiskt landskap” by Rolf Wertheimer, Sweden, 1954
Oil on panel. Signed and dated.
This early work by Rolf Wertheimer was executed in 1954, during his studies at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm under Ragnar Sandberg (1951–57). In Kubistiskt landskap, Wertheimer employs a fractured, geometric vocabulary in which the landscape is reduced to interlocking planes of color, reflecting the influence of Cubism and postwar Swedish modernism.
Balancing abstraction and representation, the painting demonstrates a strong sense of structure, rhythm, and chromatic harmony. The elongated horizontal format enhances the panoramic reading of the landscape, while the segmented composition emphasizes Wertheimer’s interest in pictorial construction over literal depiction.
The work belongs to a formative phase of Wertheimer’s artistic development, several years prior to his painterly debut in 1961 and well before the photographic practice that would later establish him as an important documenter of Stockholm. Rolf Wertheimer’s work is represented in the collection of Moderna Museet in Stockholm.
