Painting "Målning" by Rolf Wertheimer, Sweden, 1961
Oil on canvas, black wooden frame.
Rolf Wertheimer was a versatile artist working across painting, sculpture, drawing, and photography. Trained at Académie Libre in Stockholm and later under Ragnar Sandberg at the Royal Institute of Art (1951–57), he debuted as a painter in 1961—the same period in which this work was created.
His early 1960s paintings move between abstraction and figuration, marked by a refined sense of form and composition. This canvas reflects the formative stage of Wertheimer’s artistic development, preceding the photographic work that would later position him as a significant documenter of Stockholm. Wertheimer’s work is represented in the collection of Moderna Museet in Stockholm.
