Coffee table ’Conglo’ by Erling Viksjø, Bruksbo, Norway, mid-20th century
A striking ’Conglo’ coffee table by Erling Viksjø, manufactured by Bruksbo. The tabletop is composed of stones and shards in varying sizes and colours, moulded into concrete to form a richly textured surface. The arrangement of smooth ovals, fractured edges and muted tones evokes pebbled beaches and the quiet strata of the seabed, giving the object a tactile, almost geological presence.
The stones and fragments are cast directly into the concrete, producing a varied, relief-like top that reads as a miniature natural landscape. A warm wooden base provides a considered contrast to the cool, textural surface, emphasising the piece’s handcrafted quality and architectural clarity.
Viksjø’s interest in materiality and sculptural expression is evident throughout — here the rawness of coastal geology is translated into a refined, functional object. The result is a singular example of Nordic modernism where texture, form and function are harmoniously balanced.
